Judaism and Vegetarianism
"I desire mercy, not sacrifice." Hosea 6:6

Richard H. Schwartz, Ph.D., will discuss challenges facing contemporary Judaism in the context of vegetarianism. How does the production and consumption of meat violate basic Jewish/religious mandates? Is there a Biblical basis for vegetarianism? Why should everyone, including Jews, be vegetarian? What does Judaism teach about the environment, helping hungry people, conserving natural resources, justice, population growth, involvement, and protest? How important is vegetarianism with regard to global survival? All these questions and more will be answered on today's show. In addition, Dr. Schwartz will describe the connections that can be made between vegetarianism and the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, which begins on December 22nd. We'll also get an update on the documentary A Sacred Duty: Applying Jewish Values to Help Heal the World.

Review of A Sacred Duty
Don't look behind you, Al Gore. You may have that Nobel Prize, but there's one area you haven't dared to broach: livestock production and the havoc it creates in the environment and with human health. If you do look behind you, you'll find Professor Richard Schwartz who has been delivering the message for many years in books like Judaism and Vegetarianism and Judaism and Global Survival....Although the film emphasizes Judaism and Jewish teachings, the information and call to action are universal....This film dares to tread where so many environmentalists fear to go--recognizing that using animals for food is wasteful and cruel and is responsible for the destruction of the planet and human health at the same time.

STARTS DECEMBER 17, 2008
BLINDERS, exposing animal cruelty airs next week on DOCUMENTARY CHANNEL

Throughout the year, tourists from around the world travel to Central Park to ride in one of New York's legendary horse-drawn carriages. Yet the future of this industry is the subject of a highly charged debate being aired on the streets, in the press and at City Hall.  Advocates for animals say the industry should be banned because it's inhumane and unsafe.

Through original footage taken with hidden cameras and interviews with carriage drivers, veterinarians, accident witnesses, animal rights activists, politicians, tourists, residents who live near the horses and people who have rescued NYC carriage horses from slaughter, BLINDERS takes viewers behind the scenes to expose the truth behind the tradition.

BLINDERS is now being broadcast on the Documentary Channel, which is available on the DISH Network. Following is a partial list of upcoming airings:

Dec 17 - 10:00 p.m.
Dec 18 - 1:00 a.m.
Dec 21 - 5:00 p.m.
Dec 31 - 10:00 p.m.
Jan 1 - 1:00 a.m.
