and

Josphat Ngonyo

He was an orphan in rural Kenya. His relatives once survived by killing elephants for ivory, and eating bushmeat as part of their diet. But today, he's respected far and wide as one of the foremost friends of African animals. This is the story of Josphat Ngonyo.  Read more at:

About the recent election of Barrack Obama as president of the U.S.A. Josphat said:
"The people in Africa are delighted. Obama is a symbol of hope for all. He breaks the walls, mental or otherwise that separate us. He signifies the fact that we are one people,

Dr. Anteneh Roba
A Houston Emergency Room doctor from Ethiopia
Founder and Director of the Amsale Gessesse Memorial Foundation
The Amsale Gessesse Memorial Foundation was established by Dr. Anteneh Roba and Ms. Seble Nebiyeloul in July 2006 in memory of Amsale Gessesse, their beloved mother and aunt, respectively.  All life is mysterious and magnificent from single-cell organisms to highly developed, complex human beings and inherently entitled to respect and compassion. The myriad plant and animal life-forms of the earth all contain the identical life-force and are reliant upon systems of complex integrated and interdependent relationships that have created the earth's life sustaining environment.
Experience has proven that humankind upsets this delicate balance at its own peril!
The Amsale Gessesse Memorial Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to preventing, alleviating, and abolishing suffering of human and non-human animals.
Currently, the Foundation's efforts are centered upon Ethiopia,
the homeland of its namesake and founders.

The start of the holiday shopping season is also the start of the fur-free season. Animal advocates across the country will spread the word about the animal suffering behind fur and fur trim, and encourage shoppers to make humane choices.

Your reminder to consumers that animals need their fur more than we do will help reduce the numbers of animals suffering and dying for fur!

Please come out & join with Houston Animal Rights Team, Society of PEACE, Vegan World Radio, & In Solidarity With Animals members in protesting the use of fur by humans.  We'll be targeting Neiman Carcass (Marcus) again for their refusal to take fur products off of their racks.

VOLUNTEER FRUIT TREE PLANTERS NEEDED!

The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF) is an award-winning international nonprofit charity dedicated to planting fruitful trees and plants to alleviate world hunger, combat global warming, and improve the surrounding air, soil, and water. FTPF programs strategically donate orchards where the harvest will best serve communities for generations, at places such as public schools, homeless shelters, drug rehabs, low-income neighborhoods, international hunger relief sites, and animal sanctuaries. Please join us for our upcoming plantings, we need your help! Details are below...

San Antonio, Texas School Orchard Planting
When: Saturday, November 29, 2008 (9 am)
Where: Oakrun Middle School, 415 Oakrun Point, New Braunfels, TX, 78132
Contact: Rico Montenegro, FTPF Arborist (530-515-7657 or rico@ftpf.org)

Details: This day will be focused on planting the orchard under the direction of our certified arborist. Activities will include digging, planting, mulching, learning new skills from an arborist, and having lots of fun! No experience is necessary, and a rewarding experience is guaranteed, rain or shine! Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

FTPF's "Reservation Preservation" program donated over 1000 fruit trees and shrubs to Native American households and created multiple community orchards for the Havasupai tribe. The reservation has no roads leading in and is thus difficult to supply with a consistent source of fresh produce. The village is often referred to as the most remote in the country, requiring that the trees be airlifted down via helicopter. In conjunction with the Havasupai Tribal Administration, FTPF established community fruit tree orchards which are open to all members of the tribe, and planted the remaining trees in residential backyards to provide a healthy source of improved nutrition for decades to follow. When this project is complete, we will have created the first town in the world where every household has access to at least 5 fruit trees in their backyards. For more information, visit www.ftpf.org.

American Indians & Vegetarianism

Author's Note: I have written hundreds of articles on various subjects over 2 decades, worked for dozens of magazines, completed a doctoral dissertation and authored and co-authored several books, but nothing I have ever written has had the impact of this research. It has been re-produced hundreds of times in print and online. I am most often asked why I wrote it. I was researching Choctaw legends to use as bedtime stories for my children and to send to my tribal newspaper. Reading the corn legends spurred me to dig deeper...

(Dr. Rita Laws is a member of the Oklahoma Choctaw Nation. She lives and writes in Oklahoma. Her Choctaw name, Hina Hanta, means Bright Path of Peace, which is what she considers vegetarianism to be. She has been a vegetarian since 1979. She is currently preparing a revised edition of her book about Indian Peace Medals)

Returning to the Corn -Rita Laws, Ph.D. How well we know the stereotype of the rugged Plains Indian: killer of buffalo, dressed in quill-decorated buckskin, elaborately feathered headdress, and leather moccasins, living in an animal-skin teepee, master of the dog and horse, and stranger to vegetables. But this lifestyle, once limited almost exclusively to the Apaches,1 flourished no more than a couple hundred years. It is not representative of most Native Americans of today or yesterday. Indeed, the "buffalo-as-lifestyle" phenomenon is a direct result of European influence, as we shall see... (follow link to read full article)

Animal Planet Follows the Crew of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to The Bottom of the World in the new TV Series, Whale Wars

Sea Shepherd is very excited to announce that on Friday, November 7th Animal Planet will premiere the first of a series of Whale Wars at 9 PM ET/PT in the US, and internationally in early 2009.

During Sea Shepherd's Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign: Operation Migaloo in 2007/08, Animal Planet had a camera crew on board a campaign that saved the lives of nearly 500 whales, leaving the Japanese fleet with less then half of their quota and costing them tens of millions of dollars. This new seven-part, hour-long weekly series follows the crew of the Sea Shepherd vessel, Steve Irwin as they use non-violent direct action techniques that garner world wide media attention in an effort to shut down the illegal Japanese whaling fleet and enforce international conservation law. For additional information, photos and a sneak peak at the series go to: animal.discovery.com/tv/whale-wars/ .

Watch the video trailer at animal.discovery.com/tv/whale-wars/video/ . For more information on the Sea Shepherds visit www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/news-081002-1.html
