VeganWorldRadio.org :: episode # 23 : 22 December 2008

In honor of Christmas, VWR presents "Christianity and Vegetarianism" a talk by Father John Dear, S.J.

Promoting peace and nonviolence, Father John Dear, a Catholic priest, has traveled the world and believes, as Gandhi did, that Jesus was the greatest practitioner of nonviolence in history. He believes that not only must we put down our swords against one another but to truly create peace on earth as Jesus envisaged, Christians must hold all life sacred, and, thus, forgo the brutal and needless slaughter of billions of animals. By embracing a plant based diet Christians can move toward greater wholeness as spiritual beings while at the same time ending world hunger and preserving the environment. As a biblical scholar and Jesuit priest Father Dear cites ample biblical evidence to support a vegetarian and nonviolent lifestyle. He also elaborates on vegetarianism as a path to health and wholeness, providing evidence that vegetarians lead healthier and longer lives than meat eaters.

Father Dear is currently on a tour for his recent book A Persistent Peace

"In a world of massive violence and suffering, why not take whatever steps we can to become more compassionate, more nonviolent, more faithful to the peacemaking Christ? Why not become a vegetarian, for the love of God and all God's creatures? Your health will benefit. The environment will be better off. Animals will suffer less. And your spirituality will deepen and mature. The only reasons to keep eating meat are selfishness and gluttony, which are not exactly Christian ideals. We can all do better than that."

"The time has come to take another step with Jesus on the road of nonviolence. The time has come to be a vegetarian."  Father John Dear, S.J.

>>  Volunteer Feeders Urgently Needed for Large Rescue Effort of Hungry Strays

Local dogs are in critical need of volunteers who could spare a few hours for feeding and assistance with the Little York/59 rescue effort.  Food has already been provided, but volunteers are desperately needed to help with feeding during the holiday week for this large rescue effort of the 59 Corridor which has resulted in 25 happy endings since August.  Please call to help with the feeding efforts of needy animals, and also if you would like to assist in January when the Spay Neuter Assistance Program visits the Corridor Rescue Dogs.  The existing volunteers are overworked with this one and need help, so if you can, please show mercy to the animals this holiday.
