Last Chance to Speak Up AGAINST Factory Fish Prisons in our Gulf: Tell Your Texas Representatives to Listen to the People and Say No to Ocean Fish Farms in the Gulf!
The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and the National Marine Fisheries Service will be voting at the end of January on whether or not to allow industrial ocean fish farming – growing fish in huge cages in open water – in the Gulf of Mexico. This could cause a variety of problems for fishermen, our environment and recreational users of the Gulf. Thousands of people have sent in comments urging the Council not to pass this plan. Texas has two state representatives on the Council – tell them that at a minimum one should vote no - as so many Texas residents have opposed this plan! And if they both have to vote the same way then they should abstain. Listen to the people!Robin Riechers

Texas Parks and Wildlilfe/Gulf Council TX
Phone:(512) 389-4649 Dear Mr. Ray and Mr. Riechers,
At the end of this month you will have the opportunity to decide whether or not to allow industrial fish farming to become a regular practice in our Gulf waters. As representatives of the public through Texas Parks and Wildlife, I expect you to honor your commitment to public service by listening to the people. Many Texans have already voiced their opposition to this plan by submitting formal comments and you need only to look at the record to see clearly that those demanding a better plan, or no plan, far outweigh those in favor of the current one. As it stands, the plan does not have adequate safeguards for fishermen, the economies of our coastal communities, or the environment. Voting yes on it would be putting the interests of a few from the vocal aquaculture industry ahead of all those who already directly or indirectly rely financially on access to and the health of a public resource - our oceans.
Since there are two of you on the Council, at a minimum one should vote no. If, as representatives from Texas Parks and Wildlife, you must vote the same then I urge you to abstain from the vote.
Sincerely, _________[your name]__________ Texas will soon legalize factory farming of fish in the Gulf of Mexico. This is your LAST CHANCE to voice opposition to the creation of these horribly cruel, polluting and unnatural industry operations. A strong opposition movement last year caused regulators to postpone final action. However now approval seems likely without a strong public outcry. These overcrowded cages in the open ocean cause the animals to fight and struggle with each other in an immoral last ditch effort to squeeze more fish meat out of waters already exploited close to the point of collapse. Though the regulating body, The Gulf Council, has "officially" closed public comment on this issue since October, advocates against fish factory farms must CONTINUE to be vocal in opposition as long as this cruel and contaminating industry remains a threat in our Gulf. Voice your opposition, as a coastal resident now AGAINST Open Ocean Aquaculture by contacting the body handling public comment, The Gulf Coast Fisheries Council: FAX: (813) 348-1711 (Recommended), gulfcouncil@gulfcouncil.org, phone: toll-free (888) 833-1844 **Write to The GULF COUNCIL at 2203 N.
