:: episode # 24 : 29 December 2008

This morning on the last Vegan World Radio show of the year, we will be looking back at some of the events that took place in 2008 - and forward to some plans and hopes for 2009.  We will have an important commentary on the sad and horrific story of the decapitation of Mr. Buck, the tame deer who was beloved by so many.  A segment on how the world eats - and why it must change.  An update on mad cow disease and cattle mutilations - what do cattle mutilations have to do with mad cow disease?  This and much more on Vegan World Radio this morning.
Shanna Moakler and her children understand that there's no difference between the animals who are killed for food and the ones we share our homes with.

Mr. Buck's Severed Head Recovered From Suspect's Home
Officers arrested a 23-year-old man in the decapitation of Mr. Buck, a beloved deer at Bear Creek Pioneers Park's wildlife sanctuary who authorities have since learned fought back as he was attacked last month.
The November killing and mutilation of Mr. Buck shocked animal lovers across the Houston area. The 8- to 10-point buck was comfortable around people and let park visitors scratch his chin.
A park ranger found the white-tailed deer's
headless carcass in a pool of blood Nov. 25.
Authorities have since learned Mr. Buck did not go down without a fight.

Listen to Important commentary on the tragic story of Mr. Buck
on Vegan World Radio this morning.

The Way the World Eats
The Hunger for Meat

Cats in China
Associated Press
Cats peer from a cage after being saved from a market in Beijing. The Small Animal Protection Assn. says one business in Guangzhou, where cats are eaten, captures up to 10,000 a day — including pets — from around China and brings them back to be sold as food.  Cat meat sells for $1.32 a pound.
Dog meat sells for .95 cents a pound.

Large yellow-colored dogs are considered best for eating.

About 3 million of South Korea's 47 million people are estimated to eat dog meat and there are as many as 6,000 restaurants that serve dog meat in South Korea.

Why exactly is it gross to eat dogs but OK to slaughter pigs, which, by most measures, are smarter?

Capturing and eating fish and rainforest wildlife, including large primates, for human sustenance has been practiced for generations. Bushmeat can include any non-domesticated animal harvested for food such as wild pig, deer, snake, turtle, elephant, gorilla or other primates.

A Taste of Baboon and Monkey Meat, and Maybe of Prison, Too

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/17/nyregion/17meat.html

It takes strategic thinking to find monkey meat in New York. Best to avoid the word "monkey," for one thing — start with something innocuous-sounding, like "dry meat," ....
Seek out the proprietors of tiny West African restaurants, or the "bushmeat market queens" who do business out of their homes.  That is, if you can find them. And if they trust you enough to sell it to you.

Reliable statistics are hard to come by, but Heather E. Eves, director of the Bushmeat Crisis Task Force, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, estimated that more than 15,000 pounds of bushmeat come to market in the United States every month, of which only a tiny fraction is intercepted.

Walmart Sells Whale Meat in Japan

Walmart committed to cutting energy usage

and reducing waste last year, but the retail giant has a long way to go before it can be called "green." Taking dubiously-produced whale meat off the shelves would be another step in the right direction (from the New York Whale and Dolphin Action League

>> No-Kill Assessment in Jeopardy, "Bite-Case" POUND POLICY Threat to Animals

As of October of this year, the City of Houston agreed to hire "No-Kill" Advocacy specialist, Nathan Winograd to perform an assessment of Houston's animal control (BARC).  The citizens of Houston raised all the money to pay for Mr. Winograd's services.  Since that time, the assessment contract has yet been languishing in the City's Legal Dept.  To date, it is still UNSIGNED.  This is 9 weeks after the City's Legal dept received it.

NEW Unreasonable BARC "Bite-Case" Policy categorizes simple scratches as dangerous "bites" which will result in increased and unnecessary animal death at city pound.   Especially at risk are puppies and kittens who can't avoid harmless scratching.   Outraged citizens must make their voices heard in time for change at City Government.  Please find sample letters and contact information for City Leaders at No-Kill Houston .  Impounded animals need your help NOW.

Please visit www.nokillhouston.org

You can also drop off donations for BARC anytime, or at the "Meet and Greet" at Cooper Animal Clinic, Saturday. This will be another great opportunity to meet shelter animals in need of a second chance.
Call (713) 861-1155 for more information to learn how you can help homeless animals in Houston through adoption or fostering. Be sure to also visit KPFT's "Adopt a Friend"  page.

 >> Volunteer Feeders Urgently Needed for Large Rescue Effort of Hungry Strays

Local dogs are in critical need of volunteers who could spare a few hours for feeding and assistance with the Little York/59 rescue effort.  Food has already been provided, but volunteers are greatly needed to help with feeding for this large rescue effort of the 59 Corridor which has resulted in 25 happy endings since August.  Please help PAWS ANIMAL RESCUE with the feeding, and also if you would like to assist in February when the Spay Neuter Assistance Program visits the Corridor Rescue Dogs.  The existing volunteers are overworked with this one, so if you can, please show mercy to the animals and help.
