Christine Lord with her dying son Andrew.
Christine Lord, the mother of 24 year old Andrew, who died of variant CJD on December 16, 2007, reveals how her son fought the illness with courage and dignity in this personal and moving account of his death and its impact on her family.
I was asked to write some words about Andrew and words are my profession. They usually fall seamlessly from my fingers to the keyboard.
But how does a mum write about her only son who has died at just 24-years-of-age of vCJD?

No one, no one should ever have to go through this. The lack of knowledge from the medical examiner's office was disgraceful. The fact that states are not obligated to report this disease is horrible. Any person with this disease is treated so inhumanly and the families too. The world has got to be told that such a disease exists.

*******************************
A NEW form of fatal dementia has been discovered in 16 Americans, 10 of whom have already died of the condition. It resembles Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease - with patients gradually losing their ability to think, speak and move - but has features that make it distinct from known forms of CJD.
Local health officials are
awaiting test results to determine whether
a Corpus Christi man who died
earlier this month had
the human form of mad cow disease.

Concerns of mad cow disease in US beef led tens of thousands of Koreans to a candlelight vigil protesting the plan to import US beef into Korea after it was banned in 2003 when the first mad cow was found in the US. Koreans protested for almost two months. Koreans fear mad cow in US beef while US citizens have been lulled into complacency. Imports have begun again, but some supermarket chains and restaurants say they are reluctant to sell US beef, fearing negative publicity.
