episode #1 : 7 July 2008
In the Classroom:
Humane Education vs. Humane Myths:
Compassion 101
Humane education helps raise a generation that cares, that realizes
that what we do matters, not just to ourselves but also to everyone our
lives touch; a generation that understands the connections between both
our personal and cultural choices and the fate of other people, other
species, and the Earth, and takes responsibility for creating a better
world.
Humane education promotes empathy and compassion towards all other species.
David Embry
MacGregor Elementary Teacher of the Year
Nominated for HISD Teacher of the Year
I consider
my work in gardening instruction as one of my major contributions to
education. Every year,
my students grow milkweed in the garden. We then transplant it in pots
and create a walk-in butterfly atrium where students can observe the
life stages of butterflies in the classroom. Last year, my students
sang "Happy Birthday" as monarchs emerged from their chrysalises. I love being
a teacher and find it very rewarding. I am often amazed
that I actually get paid to perform a job that is challenging and yet
so much fun. I can't imagine doing anything more important with my
life.

Dave Warwak
Tenured middle school
teacher in Illinois
who was fired last fall for
incorporating veganism in his art lessons.
Warwak says there was nothing inappropriate about distributing
information on veganism. He thinks it is
inappropriate for the school to serve children recalled beef. Warwak says that with all the
school shootings that happened and the climate of schools today, something has
to change. He believes Humane Education is what's needed –
that is what is missing in schools today. Meat-eaters would like to keep veganism a secret from the public, especially the children.
384 lbs of meat from Westland was made into taco meat and fed to the children at Fox River Grove Middle School in April and May of 2007. You can confirm this with Jim Copp, Principal Consultant Division of Nutrition Programs and Support Services Illinois State Board of Education. Of course he will down play the risk - don't believe it! Although
meat has been recalled, the children may have already been infected
with a Prion particle from an infected animal.
Scientists have
suggested that the incubation for this encephalitis-like brain disease
can be many years. Mad cow is like a ticking time bomb.
